Internet safety reflection
Internet safety is a topic that I actually know a good deal about, as my family is very conscious of the dangers of the internet (my father is an internet security professional and taught me and my younger siblings well about how to stay safe on the internet). From an early age, we were taught how to safely search on the internet, we learned what computer viruses were, we learned to never download without Mom and Dad's permission (or, now that we're older, unless we know it's safe), and we knew to never click on advertisements. We were also taught about the dangers of online communication via chat rooms, email, etc. and counseled to be extremely careful in all communication that occurred online, especially with people we didn't know. Finally, the importance of creating strong, unique, and safe passwords was something we were taught from an early age. All of these early introductions to the internet safety helped me learn to be comfortable on the internet from an early age and led to my understanding of internet safety now.
As an adult, my understanding and knowledge of internet safety has grown since my childhood introduction to the topic. I still employ all of the precautions I was taught when I was young, and I have found some of my own precautions to keep myself safe on the internet. For example, I use a plug in called "Ad-Blocker Plus" on my Firefox browser that essentially blocks all ads from my internet experience. This saves me from accidently clicking on harmful ads, and it also keeps me safe from viewing immoral advertisements. In addition, I use a plug in called "Self-Destructing Cookies" that clears all cookies from websites I visit after I close them. This eliminates trackers from my PC and clears all active logins once the page closes, so I am safe from getting hacked. Also, I am very careful about what I download, I check the reputation of sites before I download, and I still make use of strong passwords. Overall, I know that my internet browsing habits are safe, and I feel that I have a firm understanding of internet safety. However, in this digital age, there is always more to learn, and I look forward to increasing in my knowledge of internet safety in the future.
