NASA Digital Learning Network Experience
NASA's digital learning network provides students with the opportunity to interact and learn from NASA education specialists and subject matter experts through interactive video conferences. The digital learning network has reached close to one million students and features subject matter pertaining to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics instruction. Numerous lessons are able to be chosen from NASA's website, with grade levels ranging from Kindergarten to 12th Grade, and every lesson is free. Therefore, NASA's Digital Learning Network provides free educational videoconferencing opportunities to students, allowing science to be integrated into the classroom and giving students a chance to learn from and be inspired by professionals in scientific fields.
In my Computer and Instructional Technology class that I took in the Spring of 2014, I, along with my class, had the opportunity to videoconference and learn from Dr. David Alexander from NASA's digital learning network. A very large television monitor was prepared in our classroom that allowed Dr. Alexander to view our entire class, and it gave us easy viewing of him, as well. When Dr. Alexander came online, we were able to interface with him almost as easily as if he had actually been in the room, instead of states away. He gave us an overview of what NASA digital learning network was and what it had to offer for educators and students alike, and gave us ideas on how to use this service in our future classrooms. Overall, the technology worked very well; occasionally, Dr. Alexander's image on the monitor would freeze or become pixilated, but usually his digital image was very clear. It was also very easy to hear him, and he seemed to be able to hear us and answer our questions easily, as well.
My experience with using a digital learning network was extremely positive. I enjoyed our time interfacing with Dr. Alexander, and I grew very excited by the possibilities that NASA's digital learning opportunities hold for the future. The ability to have free lessons on a wide variety of scientific topics for any grade level is an amazing and valuable resource for educators. I find it very surprising that more people don't know about this opportunity, and I know that I will definitely make use of NASA's digital learning network in my future classroom, and I hope to show other educators about the opportunities it offers, as well.
